Wednesday Workshops

Wednesday 14th of July (half day, 1:00pm - 4:30pm)

5 concurrent workshops will be run on Wednesday afternoon, following the official closing of the conference. These workshops will be hands on, and require all participants to bring their own wireless-enabled laptop to use during the workshop, with a current browser such as Internet Explorer 7/8, Firefox or Safari loaded.

Cost for workshops is $90 for delegates attending the Moodlemoot, and $140 for non-delegates.


Workshop 1: Phil Marriott - "Moodle 2.0 for Beginners"

About the Workshop:
In this 3 hour workshop you will build a Moodle course from the ground up using Moodle 2.0. The workshop is hands-on and intended for people who have never built a moodle course before (in any version of Moodle). You will start by creating resource pages containing single lessons and then include activities such as quizzes, wikis, and assignments. The intention is for you to build a semester/term course complete with assessments and gradebook.
About the Presenter:
Phil Marriott was once a primary/seconday teacher and has spent the last 20 years teaching Information Technology at the University of South Australia. An early adopter of Moodle, he enjoys getting beginners up and running with Moodle in time-efficient and pleasant ways.
Prerequisites:
Ability to use a web browser.


Workshop 2: Mark Drechsler - "Moving to Moodle 2.0"

About the Workshop:
In this workshop you will be introduced to the new features and structural changes introduced in Moodle 2.0. This workshop will assume you are already experienced in the use of Moodle 1.9 for creating courses and know all the common terminology used within Moodle. You will be provided access to your own Moodle 2.0 course, in which you will experiment with new features such as conditional activities, site-wide groups and file/e-portfolio repositories (including the enhanced integration with Mahara) as well as getting to know the changes in navigation introduced in Moodle 2.0.
About the Presenter:
Mark Drechsler has worked in R-12, VET and Higher Education technology environments over more than a decade, including stints as software QA guy, Business Analyst, Project Manager and Team Leader before focusing on providing training and consultancy services for tools like Moodle and Mahara. In recent times Mark has worked predominantly with Higher Education sector clients, helping them maximise their investment in Moodle and Mahara through understanding the design philosophies, learning theories and practical hands-on methods of using these systems.
Prerequisites:
Knowledge of course creation in Moodle 1.9 will be assumed.


Workshop 3: Ashley Holman - "Managing Moodle source code using Git"

About the Workshop:
Git is a popular open source version control system that can be used to manage Moodle's source code. Git makes Moodle extension, customisation and upgrading easier, more reliable and traceable. In this workshop you will learn the fundamentals behind Git, and how it can be used to manage plugins, core patches and upgrades.
About the Presenter:
Ashley Holman is the lead developer at NetSpot, and has extensive experience in managing Enterprise-level Moodle deployments for clients such as the University of Canberra and the Australian National University, where rigorous code and release management processes are a necessity.
Prerequisites:
Some knowledge of linux required, including the ability to operate at command-line level to run applications. Basic knowledge of Moodle's code structure is assumed, such as installing Moodle on a Linux platform and installing themes and plugins. This workshop is ideal for those from a technical background who want to extend their skills to improve the efficiency and reliability of their Moodle environment.

Workshop 4: Stuart Mealor - "Using Moodle in small to medium business"

About the Workshop:
This workshop will explore areas of Moodle that are of particular interest to Moodle in Business users. The session will use Moodle 2.0, although content will be equally applicable to Moodle 1.9 installations.
The topics covered in this workshop will be adapted somewhat to address the requirements of the audience. Topics scheduled to be included will be;

Workshop participants will be encouraged to share their experiences with Moodle, and to engage in discussion and debate relating to Moodle functionality supporting business users. A bespoke Moodle 2.0 business-orientated site will be available for all attendees to use during the workshop.
About Stuart Mealor:
Stuart Mealor is Managing Director of Human Resource Development International, an e-learning specialist company and Moodle Partner in New
Zealand (http://www.hrdnz.com/). Stuart has an MBA in International Business from Liverpool University. In 2004 he designed the Moodle Course Creator Certificate, and is the global Moodle Certification Manager. Stuart is also the facilitator of the Certification and Moodle in Business areas of the Moodle.org community website. During the past 18 months Stuart has presented at e-learning conferences in New Zealand, Australia (Sydney and Brisbane), Muscat (Oman), Rome, Barcelona, San Francisco and Oklahoma.
Prerequisites:
Basic understanding of Moodle.


Workshop 5: Julian Ridden - "Creating Moodle Themes"

About the Workshop:
This workshop will give participants the knowledge required to customise themes in Moodle 1.9 to change the look and feel of their Moodle site. This workshop discusses good theme development practice, shows how to edit a current theme, as well as showing some useful tools for theme development. While the course does cover concepts such as HTML and CSS editing, a strong knowledge of these technologies is not a pre-requisite.
About the Presenter:
Julian Ridden (AKA Moodleman) is well known in the Moodle Community for his love of Moodle. Having been involved with the Moodle community for 5 years now, he is seen as an expert in the field. Until recently was an IT Manager for Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview, an independent private boys school in Sydney, Australia. However, and it’s not that surprising, has finally found a way of turning his hobby into a career by joining an Australian Moodle Partner, Pukunui Technology. Julian has more than 12 years experience in education of both adults and children (specifically in online e-learning) with a wide range of both corporate clients and educational institutions as well as experience in project management, systems implementation, networking, support and training.
Prerequisites:
Knowledge of Moodle from a user perspective.
